Cultivating Curiosity: A Call to Transform Thai Society through Science and Mathematics

Introduction

In the introduction of this proposal, I'd like to clarify that I am not a math teacher or a scientist; I am an English teacher. Honestly, I've never been particularly proficient in math, and, at one point, I even harbored a dislike for it. However, witnessing the positive impact of scientific developments and technologies on people's lives and well-being has instilled in me a deep appreciation for science. While my relationship with math has been somewhat strained, I find solace in statistics, viewing it as a tool to enhance logic and mental clarity.

Recently, I came across a talk by Western scholars who posited that science is more aligned with Western ideologies, emphasizing the science of the head. In contrast, they suggested that the East, symbolized by countries like Thailand, embodies the heart, representing the core of civilization. This perspective has left me pondering their assertion that we, as Thais, might not be perceived as scientific. It prompts me to question, if not scientific, then what exactly are we?

In the rich tapestry of Thai society, superstitions have woven themselves into the fabric of everyday life, shaping cultural beliefs and practices.  While traditions hold immense value, there is a growing realization that fostering a spirit of curiosity and critical thinking is essential for the progress of our society. Embracing science and mathematics education provides a transformative pathway to empower the next generation with the tools to question, seek answers, and engage in reasoned discussions.

I found Pramoedya Ananta Toer's inquiries intriguing, especially when he delves into the question of Western powers' superiority over Indonesia during that historical period. His question probes whether this superiority rested on military might, surpassing Indonesia's strength, or if it extended to intellectual capacities, suggesting a perceived intelligence disparity.

While I might not provide a definitive answer to his thought-provoking question, it does pivot around themes of education and civilization. Pramoedya Ananta Toer appears to be contemplating whether the Western powers' ascendancy was attributed to military dominance, indicative of a historical power imbalance, or if it transcended into intellectual realms, reflecting on education and knowledge disparities.

This question prompts a reflection on the multifaceted dimensions of superiority during that era, inviting contemplation on the interplay between military strength, intellectual prowess, and the broader context of civilization. It underscores the intricate relationship between education, power dynamics, and the nuances of historical encounters.

Let us explore the imperative to encourage children to embark on a journey of intellectual exploration, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.
