AI Learning Principle: Automate What is Automatable

AI Learning Principle: Automate what is Automatable

I would like to discuss one of the AI principles, "Automate what is automatable," which captures an essential concept in the context of self-learning platforms like MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) or Coursera. Let's break it down:

1. Automate: Automation involves the use of technology or processes to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. In the context of learning, automation refers to utilizing tools, algorithms, or systems to streamline and enhance the learning experience.

2. Automatable: This refers to tasks or processes that can be automated, meaning they can be performed by machines or algorithms instead of humans.

In the context of self-learning platforms:

- Repetitive Tasks: Many aspects of learning involve repetitive tasks, such as taking quizzes, reviewing notes, or practicing exercises. These tasks can often be automated using technology. For example, quiz grading can be automated through online platforms, allowing learners to receive instant feedback on their performance.

- Content Delivery: Automation can be utilized to deliver learning materials efficiently. For instance, algorithms can recommend relevant courses or resources based on a learner's interests, previous courses taken, or learning progress.

- Adaptive Learning: Automation can enable adaptive learning experiences tailored to each learner's needs. Algorithms can analyze a learner's performance and preferences to suggest personalized learning paths or adjust the difficulty level of exercises accordingly.

- Feedback and Assessment: Automation can provide immediate feedback and assessment. For instance, automated grading systems can evaluate assignments or coding exercises, allowing learners to receive feedback promptly and focus on areas needing improvement.

- Community Engagement: Automation can facilitate community engagement. For example, automated systems can match learners with study groups or discussion forums based on shared interests or learning goals.

It's worth noting that process automation isn't a new concept—it predates the recent AI hype (apologies for the term "hype" in connection with AI). An example is the ATM (Automatic Teller Machine), which has brought significant changes to the banking industry.

Another familiar instance is vending machines, which allow customers to make purchases without needing assistance. Personally, I appreciate the convenience of automatic coffee machines. They provide freshly brewed coffee without the need to visit a coffee bar.

Some may argue that automation kills jobs, but I disagree. Why? Many tasks involve hard labor and can be dangerous. These should be handled by non-human entities. Humans can then focus on more creative endeavors.

"Automate what is automatable" in the context of self-learning platforms emphasizes leveraging technology and automation to streamline repetitive tasks, deliver personalized learning experiences, provide timely feedback, and enhance overall learning efficiency and effectiveness.
