Superlative Adjectives Made Easy!

Superlative Adjectives Made Easy!

Janpha Thadphoothon

This post is all about superlative adjectives, the words we use to describe the most or least extreme version of something. Let's break it down with examples:

1. Finding the "Bests" with "One of," "Some of," and "Among":

We use these phrases with superlative adjectives to talk about the absolute best (or worst) within a larger group.

Example: "The ballet company gave one of the most exciting performances of the season." (There were many good performances, but this one was the most exciting)

Example: "Monet's paintings are among the most famous in the exhibit." (There are many famous paintings, but Monet's are considered to be some of the very best)

2. Superlative Suffixes: Making the "- est"

Most adjectives with two or more syllables use the suffix -est to become superlative.

Example: "The fireworks were some of the biggest I've ever seen."

Adjectives with one syllable usually change their ending to form the superlative. Here are some common changes:

-y to -iest: "My friend played the easiest game at the carnival"

Consonant + vowel + consonant -> double the consonant and add -est: "John brought one of the most delicious dishes to the food fair" (happy becomes happiest)

3. The Short Cut: Leaving Out the Repeated Noun

Sometimes, when the superlative adjective describes the same noun we already mentioned, we can skip repeating the noun.

Example: "The band was very good. In fact, it was among the best (musical groups) at the summer festival."

Remember: Superlative adjectives are the ultimate bragging rights for describing something as the absolute best (or worst) in its category!
