The Foundations of Lesson Planning

Explore the instruction cycle, the key components of an ELT lesson plan, the ABCD objective framework, and objective-evaluation concordance before starting the test.

1. The OLE Model (Instruction Cycle)

The OLE Model represents the cyclic, interdependent nature of teaching and learning:

• O = Objectives: What learners should know or be able to do.
• L = Learning: Instructional activities, presentation, and classroom practice.
• E = Evaluation: Assessment procedures used to measure whether objectives were met.

Concordance: Effective instruction requires direct alignment between Objectives (O) and Evaluation (E).

2. Essential Components of an ELT Lesson Plan

Topic	Subject matter of the lesson (e.g., ASEAN Member States and Flags).
Objectives	Measurable learning targets expected by the end of the session.
Materials	Handouts, flashcards, real objects (realia), puppets, posters, maps, etc.
Presentation	Warm-up, introduction, and direct teaching/modeling of content.
Practice	Guided and independent student activities to rehearse language.
Evaluation	Measuring target performance using worksheets, tasks, quizzes, or tests.

3. Writing Behavioral Objectives: The ABCD Model

To be effective, objectives must be observable and measurable, containing 4 distinct elements:

• A — Audience: Who is learning? (the students)
• B — Behavior: Observable action verb (spell, read, match, identify, pronounce)
• C — Condition: Setting or circumstances (by the end of the session, given a map)
• D — Degree: Standard of acceptable performance (at least 80% correctly)

Example Objective: "By the end of the session [C], the students [A] should be able to match the names of the ASEAN members with their flags [B] 80% correctly [D]."

4. Behavioral Verbs & Concordance (O ↔ E)

Observable Verbs: Use specific action words rather than vague terms like "understand" or "know":

choose, define, label, spell, list, match, name, recall, compare, contrast, explain, summarize, classify, pronounce, construct sentences
