Theories of Second Language Acquisition
ทฤษฎีการเรียนรู้ภาษาที่สอง: Understanding the Building Blocks
How does Second Language Acquisition (SLA) work?
SLA explores how individuals acquire an additional language (such as Thai students learning English). Review these 4 pillars and key terms before testing your understanding.
1. Input Hypothesis — Stephen Krashen
Core Idea: Language is acquired most effectively through comprehensible input. Learners must receive messages pitched slightly beyond their current competence level (i + 1), but still understandable via context and visual cues.
สมมติฐานอินพุต: การเรียนรู้ภาษาที่มีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดเกิดขึ้นจากการรับข้อมูลภาษาที่เข้าใจได้ โดยระดับภาษาควรสูงกว่าระดับปัจจุบันเล็กน้อย (i+1)
2. Universal Grammar (UG) — Noam Chomsky
Core Idea: Humans are biologically pre-wired with an innate faculty to acquire language. All human languages share common underlying structural principles that guide how we internalize grammar.
ไวยากรณ์สากล: มนุษย์มีความสามารถโดยธรรมชาติในการเรียนรู้ภาษา ภาษาทั้งหมดมีโครงสร้างพื้นฐานร่วมกันที่ช่วยชี้นำกระบวนการเรียนรู้
3. Output Hypothesis — Merrill Swain
Core Idea: Receptive input alone is not enough. Producing language (speaking and writing) forces learners to shift from semantic processing to syntactic processing, allowing them to test hypotheses and notice linguistic gaps.
สมมติฐานเอาต์พุต: การผลิตภาษา (พูดและเขียน) ช่วยให้ผู้เรียนได้ทดสอบสมมติฐาน สังเกตช่องว่างในความรู้ และพัฒนาความแม่นยำทางไวยากรณ์
4. Interaction Hypothesis — Michael Long
Core Idea: Meaningful social communication and the negotiation of meaning (clarification requests, confirmation checks) connect input, internal capacity, and output in authentic contexts.
สมมติฐานปฏิสัมพันธ์: การสื่อสารที่มีความหมายและการเจรจาต่อรองความหมายระหว่างผู้สนทนาช่วยให้เกิดอินพุตที่เข้าใจได้และโอกาสในการรับฟีดแบ็ก
