Working with AI: Why and How
Janpha ThadphoothonI'm thrilled to share my thoughts and experiences with you as an English teacher at a Thai university. In today's fast-paced world, where technology evolves at an unprecedented rate, I've become a fervent supporter of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing. These AI models have not only revolutionized the way I teach but have also made a significant impact on the efficiency and quality of my work.
When it comes to teaching, one of the most precious commodities is time. AI, in the form of generative models, has been a game-changer in this respect. With these remarkable tools at my disposal, I've noticed a considerable reduction in the time it takes to complete various tasks. Whether it's crafting engaging lesson plans, grading assignments, or assisting students, the assistance provided by AI has been invaluable.
The quality of work has also experienced a substantial boost. These AI models can generate content that is on par with, if not surpassing, human-produced work. They assist me in creating thought-provoking exercises, providing detailed feedback on student assignments, and even generating written content for research and publications. This, in turn, has enhanced the overall educational experience for both my students and me.
Now, I understand that some may harbor concerns about relying too heavily on machines and AI. They fear that it might diminish the human touch in education. However, I firmly believe that the key lies in striking a harmonious balance between AI and human involvement. AI is here to assist and augment our capabilities, not replace them. In my experience, I've found that a collaborative approach, wherein AI aids in repetitive or time-consuming tasks, allows me to focus more on the aspects of teaching that truly require the human touch, such as fostering critical thinking and nurturing creativity.
The digital age has ushered in a new era of work, and the integration of AI in various industries, including education, is an undeniable reality. This paradigm shift is not a temporary trend but a long-lasting transformation. Embracing AI as a valuable tool in our educational journey is the way forward, ensuring that we remain adaptable and provide our students with the best possible learning experience. AI is here to stay.
So, in conclusion, my journey as an English professor at a Thai university has been enriched by the inclusion of AI in my daily routine. I've learned that AI, like ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing, can be our greatest ally in achieving greater efficiency and quality in education. I find it harder to return to my traditional teaching practice.
The key is to welcome these technological advancements with open arms, combining the best of both worlds and ensuring that our students benefit from the best education possible in this digital age.
