Professor Emeritus Dr. Paitoon Sinlarat is a faculty member of DPU CES, former Dean of the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University and former Chair of the Teachers Council of Thailand
Abstract of Presentation
With Codid-19 pandemic, climate change, and digital disruption, educators, researchers, and administrators around the world are facing new realities. What worked in the past seems to lose it potency in the digital era. The world has radically changed in many domains. Youngsters rely on their smartphones rather than paper books as main tools for their learning. In the sphere of IT and industries, the notion of the 4th revolution has been articulated and experts have warned of the consequences. Education needs another round of reform. We need to transform our perceptions and ways of doing things. Knowledge giving has become a mode of learning in the past. In this talk, I call for a new education for a new generation of learners. By new education, I mean a new paradigm and new ways of doing education.
2. Prof. Dr. Peter Charles Taylor (PhD, MEd, DipEd, BSc)
About the Presenter:
Peter Charles Taylor is Chair of the International Transformative Education & Research Network (iTERN) and Adjunct Professor of Transformative STEAM Education at Murdoch University, Australia. He has worked in universities for over 3 decades, specialising in research as transformative learning for cultural and environmental sustainability. His model of transformative research engages professional educators in exploring their cultural histories and identities, excavating their values and beliefs, reconceptualizing their professional practices, and developing their agency as transformative educators for a sustainable world. His latest book, co-authored with Professor Bal Chandra Luitel, Kathmandu University, is Research as Transformative Learning for Sustainable Futures: Glocal Voices and Visions (2019, Brill/Sense).
Students of the natural sciences learn to understand objectively the world out there – at arm’s length - the material world of naturally occurring objects and events. However, this materialistic worldview has not only fueled the 4th Industrial Revolution but has also triggered the Anthropocene, an unprecedented geological era that is disrupting the planet’s natural systems and giving rise to global crises such as climate change, extreme weather, acidification of the oceans, catastrophic wildfires, loss of biocultural diversity, and plastic pollution of our rivers, oceans and food chain. But all is not lost!. As a mentor of STEM educators undertaking transformative research, I have witnessed the power of the Arts to generate deep insights into the nonmaterial world – the world in here - the subjective realm of personal experience wherein lies our sedimented values and beliefs which underpin our professional identities and practices. For visionary STE(A)M educators, the Arts provide powerful methods for transforming the worldviews of their students, to empower them with the capacity and commitment to live and work sustainably. In this presentation I will argue the moral (ethical) imperative that STEM educators need to embrace the Arts for the purpose of preparing their students to contribute to a sustainable world.

Dr. George M. Jacobs
Title presentation: "Transformations Big and Small; Globally, We Need Them All"
About the Presenter:
Dr George M Jacobs has
taught in many countries, including in Thailand. His main focuses are
student-centered education, humane education, and environmental education. He
has more than 250 publication in books, journals, and other media. George
serves or served on the boards of such international and Singapore
organizations as Extensive Reading Foundation, International Association for
the Study of Cooperation in Education, International Ecolinguistics
Association, International Vegetarian Union, Kampung Senang Charity and
Education Foundation, and Centre for a Responsible Future. George is a
Singaporean and has lived in Singapore since 1993, teaching at the South East
Asia Ministers of Education’s Regional Language Centre, Nanyang Technological
University, James Cook University, and others.
Abstract of Presentation:
Major changes, good and bad, have taken place around the world since I was born near the middle of the past century. Fortunately, our understanding of the living and physical worlds continues to increase, and educators and others are using this knowledge to make the remainder of the present century one full of beneficial transformations, so that we can transition to better times. This paper advocates that to make this transition to greater health, harmony, happiness, and learning, we need transformations of all sizes. Small transformations take place within and among individuals, such as one of our students decides to cooperate more with the student in the next desk instead of focusing on competing against them, or one of our teacher colleagues decides to reduce their individual greenhouse gas emissions, or a family relies on themselves for more of our entertainment, rather than looking to media giants, such as K-Pop, social media influencers, Bollywood, or Hollywood.
Dr Caleon Imelda Santos
Title presentation: “Flourishing in the New Normal: Insights from Positive Psychology”
Abstract of Presentation:
The pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges across all domains of human life, including education. Teachers and students need to significantly modify their approaches and adopt new dispositions in teaching and learning, respectively, in order to deal with such challenges. Aside from these educational challenges, teachers and students also need to strive harder to maintain or boost their well-being. This presentation will elucidate key insights from positive psychology, the science of well-being, to help educators and students to navigate life in the new normal effectively and enhance their potential to flourish in the midst of the harsh realities posed by the pandemic.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Imelda Santos Caleon is an Assistant Dean on Partnerships, Programme Director of the Lifelong Learning, Cognition and Well-being Research Programme, and Senior Research Scientist at the Office of Education Research, National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Dr. Caleon received Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees from NTU; a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a Master of Science degree in Teaching Physics from the De La Salle University (DLSU). She is a three-time recipient of the Dean’s Commendation for Research Award at NIE. Her research interests are in the areas of positive education and science education. Her research portfolio amounts to about USD3.5M of competitive research funds. Her research was published in many peer-reviewed and high-ranking journals in educational psychology, education research and science education. Dr. Caleon has also utilized various platforms to share her research with and engage key education stakeholders. She conducted close to 100 workshops and presentations by invitation. Her research was featured in the Straits Times—the most-read broadsheet newspaper in Singapore. She was a physics teacher for ten years.
