What Do We Gain from Reading Literature? A Treasure of Language and Thought

ผมแน่ใจว่าคุณเห็นด้วยกับผมว่า ในยุคที่โลกหมุนเร็ว เรามักถูกดึงดูดด้วยข้อมูลที่รวดเร็วและกระชับ จนบางครั้งเราก็มองข้ามคุณค่าที่ซ่อนอยู่ในงานที่ต้องใช้เวลาในการซึมซับอย่าง "วรรณกรรม" ไป

I am sure you agree with me that in this fast-paced world, we are often drawn to quick and concise information, sometimes causing us to overlook the hidden value in works that require time to absorb, such as "literature."

ส่วนตัว ผมเชื่อว่า การอ่านวรรณกรรมไม่ได้เป็นเพียงกิจกรรมยามว่างเท่านั้น แต่คือการลงทุนทางปัญญาที่ให้ผลตอบแทนสูงที่สุดอย่างหนึ่ง ผมคิดว่า ประโยชน์ที่เราได้รับจากการดำดิ่งลงไปในโลกของนวนิยาย บทกวี หรือบทละครนั้นมีมากมายเกินกว่าที่เราจะจินตนาการได้

Personally, I believe that reading literature is not just a leisure activity; it is one of the highest-yielding intellectual investments. I think the benefits we gain from immersing ourselves in the world of novels, poetry, or plays are far more numerous than we can imagine.

1. Developing Intelligence and Human Understanding

อย่างที่เรารู้กันดี วรรณกรรมคือภาพสะท้อนของชีวิต ผมอยากให้คุณลองจินตนาการว่า การอ่านวรรณกรรมชั้นดีก็เหมือนกับการได้สวมรองเท้าของตัวละครหลายร้อยตัวที่มาจากต่างยุคต่างสมัย ต่างสถานการณ์ สัญชาตญาณบอกผมว่า สิ่งนี้ช่วยขยายขอบเขตความเห็นอกเห็นใจ (Empathy) และทำให้เราเข้าใจแรงจูงใจที่ซับซ้อนของมนุษย์ได้ดียิ่งขึ้น

As we know well, literature is a reflection of life. I would like you to imagine that reading good literature is like walking in the shoes of hundreds of characters from different eras, times, and situations. My instinct tells me that this expands the scope of empathy and allows us to better understand the complex motivations of human beings.

ในทางทฤษฎี การที่เราต้องตีความสัญลักษณ์ คำเปรียบเทียบ และเรื่องราวที่ซับซ้อนในวรรณกรรมนั้น เป็นการฝึกสมองให้คิดวิเคราะห์ (Critical Thinking) และคิดเชิงนามธรรม (Abstract Thinking) ได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม ผู้เชี่ยวชาญส่วนใหญ่มองว่า ทักษะเหล่านี้จำเป็นอย่างยิ่งต่อความสำเร็จในทุกสาขาอาชีพ

In theory, the necessity of interpreting symbols, metaphors, and complex narratives in literature is an excellent way to train the brain for critical thinking and abstract thinking. Most experts view these skills as essential for success in all professions.

2. A Linguistic Treasure Trove for Students

สำหรับนักเรียนนักศึกษาที่เรียนภาษาต่างประเทศ เช่น ภาษาอังกฤษ ผมเชื่อมั่นว่า การอ่านวรรณกรรมคือเครื่องมือที่ทรงพลังที่สุดในการพัฒนาทักษะทางภาษาของตนเอง

For students learning a foreign language, such as English, I am confident that reading literature is the most powerful tool for developing their language skills.

• ความซับซ้อนของภาษา (Linguistic Complexity): เมื่อเป็นเช่นนั้น ผมก็รู้ทันทีว่า วรรณกรรม โดยเฉพาะ วรรณกรรมภาษาอังกฤษ มักใช้โครงสร้างประโยคที่หลากหลายและซับซ้อนมากกว่าภาษาที่เราใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน ผมต้องยอมรับว่า การอ่านงานเขียนเหล่านี้ช่วยเพิ่มความเข้าใจในไวยากรณ์ขั้นสูงได้เป็นอย่างดี

  • Linguistic Complexity: When that is the case, I instantly know that literature, especially English literature, often uses more varied and complex sentence structures than the language we use daily. I must admit that reading these works greatly improves the comprehension of advanced grammar.

• คลังคำศัพท์ (Vocabulary Bank): เป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่า วรรณกรรมคือแหล่งรวมคำศัพท์ที่ลึกซึ้งและไม่ค่อยได้ใช้ในบทสนทนาทั่วไป ผมเดาว่ามันเป็น วิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการขยายคลังคำศัพท์และเรียนรู้ความหมายที่แท้จริงของคำในบริบทที่แตกต่างกัน

  • Vocabulary Bank: It is well known that literature is a reservoir of profound vocabulary not commonly used in everyday conversation. I guess it is the best way to expand one's lexicon and learn the true meaning of words in various contexts.

• การซึมซับสำนวนและวัฒนธรรม (Absorbing Idioms and Culture): ผมไม่ใช่ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ แต่ผม มั่นใจว่าการอ่านวรรณกรรมโลกจากประเทศต้นกำเนิด เช่น วรรณกรรมภาษาอังกฤษจากอังกฤษหรืออเมริกา ช่วยให้นักศึกษาเข้าใจสำนวน การใช้ภาษาที่เป็นธรรมชาติ และซึมซับวัฒนธรรมที่ซ่อนอยู่ในภาษาได้ลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้น

  • Absorbing Idioms and Culture: I am not an expert, but I am sure that reading World Literature from its country of origin, such as English literature from the UK or the US, helps students better understand idioms, natural language usage, and deeply absorb the culture embedded within the language.

การอ่านวรรณกรรมคือการเปิดประตูสู่โลกที่กว้างใหญ่กว่าโลกที่เราอยู่จริง ๆ มันมอบทั้งความรู้ทางภาษา ปัญญาทางความคิด และความลึกซึ้งทางอารมณ์

However, I think it is the case that reading literature opens a door to a world larger than the one we actually inhabit. It grants us linguistic knowledge, intellectual wisdom, and emotional depth.

ถ้าพูดแบบง่ายๆ เราก็สามารถพูดได้ว่า การอ่านวรรณกรรมทำให้เราเป็นมนุษย์ที่สมบูรณ์แบบมากขึ้น ทั้งในด้านความรู้ ภาษา และความเข้าใจต่อเพื่อนมนุษย์

If put simply, we can say that reading literature makes us more complete human beings in terms of knowledge, language, and understanding of our fellow humans.
