ผมแน่ใจว่าคุณเห็นด้วยกับผมว่า ในโลกยุคโลกาภิวัตน์เช่นนี้ วงการวรรณกรรมก็ไม่ได้ถูกจำกัดอยู่แค่ในพรมแดนของชาติใดชาติหนึ่งอีกต่อไป คำว่า "วรรณกรรมโลก" (World Literature) จึงเข้ามามีบทบาทสำคัญในการทำความเข้าใจถึงการแพร่หลายและคุณค่าของงานเขียนในระดับสากล

I am sure you agree with me that in a globalized world like ours, the realm of literature is no longer confined to the borders of any single nation. The term "World Literature" therefore plays a crucial role in understanding the dissemination and value of written works on an international scale.

The Definition and Expansion of "World Literature"

อย่างที่เรารู้กันดี วรรณกรรมโลกคือ วรรณกรรมที่แพร่กระจายออกนอกประเทศต้นกำเนิด ทำให้ผู้อ่านในหลากหลายวัฒนธรรมได้เข้าถึงและสัมผัสกับผลงานวรรณกรรมจากทั่วโลก ผมคิดว่า นี่คือจุดเปลี่ยนที่สำคัญที่ทำให้งานเขียนชิ้นหนึ่งเป็นมากกว่าแค่ "วรรณกรรมแห่งชาติ"

As we know well, World Literature is literature that spreads beyond its country of origin, allowing readers from diverse cultures to access and experience literary works from around the globe. I think this is the critical turning point that makes a piece of writing more than just "National Literature."

แต่เดิมนั้น หลายคนบอกว่า คำนี้มักจะหมายถึงผลงานชิ้นเอกของวรรณกรรมตะวันตกหรือวรรณกรรมยุโรปตะวันตกเท่านั้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ผู้เชี่ยวชาญส่วนใหญ่มองว่า ความหมายของวรรณกรรมโลกได้ขยายวงกว้างขึ้นมากในปัจจุบัน โดยครอบคลุม วรรณกรรมจากนานาชาติในปัจจุบัน ทั้งจากเอเชีย แอฟริกา ละตินอเมริกา หรือภูมิภาคอื่น ๆ ทั่วโลก

In the past, many people say that the term often referred only to the masterpieces of Western literature or Western European literature. However, most experts view the meaning of World Literature as having expanded significantly today, encompassing contemporary international literature from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and other regions worldwide.

The Process of Becoming "World Literature": A Journey Across Languages

ในความคิดของผม การที่งานเขียนชิ้นหนึ่งจะกลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ "วรรณกรรมโลก" ได้นั้น ไม่ใช่เรื่องบังเอิญ แต่มีกระบวนการที่ชัดเจน:

In my opinion, the journey of a written work to become a part of "World Literature" is not accidental but involves a clear process:

1. การถูกอ่านในฐานะวรรณกรรม (Being Read as Literature): งานเขียนนั้นจะต้องมีคุณค่าทางวรรณศิลป์และสาระจนได้รับการยอมรับในฐานะงานเขียนที่มีคุณภาพก่อน

2. การแพร่กระจายออกไป (Dissemination): จากนั้น งานเขียนจะถูกแปลและแพร่กระจายออกไปสู่โลกที่กว้างกว่าต้นกำเนิดทางภาษาและวัฒนธรรมของมัน

สิ่งที่เรารู้และเห็นด้วยกันทั้งหมด คือ การแปล (Translation) และ การเข้าถึง (Accessibility) มีบทบาทสำคัญอย่างยิ่งในการทำให้งานวรรณกรรมชิ้นหนึ่งเดินทางข้ามพรมแดนได้

1. Being Read as Literature: The work must first possess literary merit and substance to be acknowledged as a quality piece of writing.

2. Dissemination: The work is then translated and spread to a world wider than its linguistic and cultural origin.

What we all know and agree on is that Translation and Accessibility play a crucial role in enabling a literary work to travel across borders.

บทบาทของสิ่งพิมพ์และการเข้าถึง (The Role of Publishing and Access)

ผมเชื่อมั่นว่า การพิมพ์หนังสือราคาไม่แพงและการเข้าถึงห้องสมุดสาธารณะได้เปลี่ยนโฉมหน้าของวรรณกรรมโลกไปโดยสิ้นเชิง นั่นคือสมัยที่ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างเรียบง่าย แต่การปฏิวัติการพิมพ์ได้ทำให้นักอ่านทั่วโลกสามารถเข้าถึงงานวรรณกรรมที่ถูกแปลได้ในวงกว้าง ผมเคยอ่านข่าวมาว่า การที่หนังสือได้รับการพิมพ์ซ้ำในประเทศต่างๆ ถือเป็นสัญญาณสำคัญของการเป็นวรรณกรรมโลก

I am confident that the proliferation of inexpensive books and access to public libraries have fundamentally transformed World Literature. That was a time when everything was simple, but the printing revolution has allowed readers worldwide to widely access translated literary works. I once read in the news that a book being reprinted in various countries is considered a vital sign of its status as World Literature.

มิติใหม่ในการศึกษา New Dimensions in Study

ผมไม่แน่ใจแต่ สาขาวิชาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับวรรณกรรมโลกได้ขยายตัวอย่างมากในสถาบันการศึกษาชั้นนำทั่วโลก ให้ผมแนะนำแนวคิดของ การศึกษาที่เน้นการเปรียบเทียบและการวิเคราะห์งานเขียนจากหลากหลายภาษาและวัฒนธรรม อย่างเช่น คณะอักษรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ที่มีการเปิดสาขาวิชาวรรณกรรมโลกและการเขียนเชิงสร้างสรรค์

I am not sure, but academic fields related to World Literature have expanded significantly in leading educational institutions globally. Let me introduce the concept of studies focusing on the comparison and analysis of works from diverse languages and cultures. For example, the Faculty of Arts at Chulalongkorn University offers a program in World Literature and Creative Writing.

โดยพื้นฐานแล้ว ผมยืนยันว่า การเรียนรู้ "วรรณกรรมโลก" ไม่ใช่แค่การอ่าน แต่คือการเปิดใจรับรู้ถึงความหลากหลายของมนุษย์ และทำความเข้าใจโลกผ่านเรื่องเล่าที่เดินทางมาจากทุกมุมโลก

Basically, I assert that studying "World Literature" is not just about reading; it's about opening one's mind to human diversity and understanding the world through narratives that have traveled from every corner of the globe.
