⚓ Introduction: Misfortune and Determination

"The Old Man and the Sea" is the story of Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman. He is having terrible luck and has not caught a fish in 84 days. The other fishermen think he is "salao," which means the worst kind of unlucky. Manolin, his young friend, used to fish with him, but Manolin’s parents made him join a "luckier" boat. Manolin still loves Santiago. He visits the old man every night, helping him carry his gear, bringing him food, and talking about baseball.

🧭 The Great Struggle

Determined to break his bad luck, Santiago takes his small boat, called a skiff, very far out into the ocean. On the 85th day, he hooks a giant fish—a marlin that is longer than his boat. The marlin is too big to pull in. Instead, the huge fish begins to pull Santiago and his boat across the sea for three days and two nights. The old man holds onto the line, tired and in great pain. His hands are cut and bleeding, but he feels a deep respect for the strong, noble fish, calling it his "brother."

🦈 The Shark Battle and Loss

He finally wins the battle and kills the marlin, tying it to the side of his skiff. However, as Santiago sails home, the marlin's blood attracts sharks. He fights them bravely, using his harpoon and a knife, but there are too many. The sharks eat all the meat from the giant fish. Santiago finally reaches the harbor late at night, exhausted. All that is left of his great catch is its massive white skeleton.

🌅 The Dream and the Promise

The next morning, the other fishermen are amazed by the size of the skeleton. Manolin finds Santiago sleeping in his shack and cries when he sees the old man's wounded hands. Manolin promises to fish with Santiago again, saying he still has much to learn. Santiago, having proven his strength, repeatedly dreams of lions playing on a beach in Africa.
