Modals of Obligation (Must, Have to, Need to)

1. Strong Obligation/Necessity

MUST: Expresses a strong, often **internal or personal, obligation** (the speaker thinks it's necessary).
- Example: **I must remember** to call the doctor tomorrow. (Internal feeling/decision)
- Example: This is a great film! **You must watch** it! (Strong recommendation/personal conviction)

HAVE TO / NEED TO: Expresses an **external obligation** (rule, law, duty, or required necessity).
- Example: We **have to submit** the report by Friday. (External deadline/rule)
- Example: All passengers **need to show** their passport. (External rule/requirement)
2. Absence of Obligation (Not Necessary)

DON'T HAVE TO / DON'T NEED TO: Means something is **not necessary** or not required. (You can do it, but you don't need to.)
- Example: You **don't have to come** to the party if you're busy. (No obligation)
- Example: We **don't need to buy** milk; we still have some. (No necessity)
3. Prohibition (Forbidden)

MUSTN'T: Expresses a **strong prohibition** or rule against doing something. (It is forbidden.)
- Example: You **mustn't use** your phone while driving. (Strong rule/law)
- Example: We **mustn't forget** to back up our work. (Strong negative necessity/warning)
