Memory Principles
Two Key Memory Principles
This lesson will introduce you to two powerful principles for improving your memory: **Classification** and **Association**. By learning how to organize and connect information, you can make it easier to remember. Click "Next" to begin.
1. Classification
Classification is the process of organizing information into meaningful categories. This helps your brain create a system for retrieval.
Example:
Instead of trying to remember a random list of words like "Monkeys, roses, tigers, black, bees, white, elephants," you can classify them:
- **Animals:** Monkeys, tigers, elephants, bees
- **Plants:** Roses
- **Colors:** Black, white
2. Association / Relation
Association is the process of connecting new information to something you already know. This creates a link in your memory, making the new information easier to recall. You can use sound, images, or stories to create these links.
Example:
**Sound Association:** To remember the word "Etiquette," you can use a Thai phrase like "เอ็ดแล้วตี" (pronounced "ed laew tee"), which sounds similar and creates a memorable, if silly, connection.
**Image Association:** Creating a vivid mental image can help. For example, imagining a tiger drinking a rose-flavored soda can help you remember "tiger" and "rose" together.
Mnemonics
A **mnemonic** is a memory aid that uses a phrase, word, or rhyme to help you remember something. Mnemonics are a powerful form of association.
Examples:
**For the Planets:** A classic mnemonic for the planets in order from the sun is "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos." The first letter of each word corresponds to a planet: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
**For Thai Consonants:** The Thai phrase "ไก่ จิก เด็ก ตาย บน ปาก โอ่ง" (Gai Jik Dek Tai Bon Pak Ong) is a mnemonic for the middle class consonants.
